Nocturne Season 1 — A detective searches for a missing girl as an agent goes undercover

A boy who vanished three years ago returns alive. His sister, who disappeared with him, is still missing. Apple TV’s crime thriller Nocturne follows the renewed investigation and an FBI agent who goes undercover to get answers from an imprisoned serial killer.
The missing-person case reopens when a boy returns
Detective Jonah Lynn pursues the possibility that the remaining victim is still alive. The difficulty is that the suspected killer, Jurek Walter, is already confined in a psychiatric facility. Finding out what happened outside means reaching the man inside. FBI agent Saga Bauer poses as a patient to approach him.
This is an investigation in which getting closer to the killer is part of the job. Its premise offers a different attraction from a fugitive chase: conversations, concealed information and the danger of trying to read someone who is also reading you.

Jonah, Saga and Jurek: three sides of the investigation

Jonah Lynn — Liev Schreiber
An ex-soldier turned detective who resumes the search for a missing victim after the boy returns. He works with Saga and regards her as a surrogate daughter.

Saga Bauer — Zazie Beetz
The FBI agent who poses as a patient to approach Jurek. While Jonah searches outside the facility, Saga has to share the killer’s confined world. Their work proceeds from different sides of the same case.

Jurek Walter — Stephen Graham
A notorious serial killer held in a psychiatric facility. His confinement has not removed the need to question him: he holds information about the missing victim. Saga’s attempt to obtain it places their encounters at the center of the undercover operation.
Swedish crime novels move to Pennsylvania
The series draws on Lars Kepler’s crime novels Lazarus and The Sandman, moving the story to Pennsylvania. Jonah is an ex-soldier turned detective who has sought a quieter life in a small town, only for Jurek’s crimes to threaten him and the people around him.
Rowan Joffé created the series, while John Hlavin developed it and serves as showrunner. Tim Van Patten, whose credits include Masters of the Air, directed the opening two episodes. The small-town investigation, the undercover operation and Jonah’s close connection to Saga place a personal relationship alongside the missing-person mystery.

Strong performances, divided views on the storytelling
Lucy Mangan praised Graham’s performance but found some characters underdeveloped. Lucy Mangan · The Guardian · October 29, 2026 · later-story spoilers
Radio Times critic Jack Seale also identifies Graham’s performance as the main attraction. His reservations concern the crowded characters, timelines and plotlines, and the time it takes for the investigation to come together. He finds the traumatic backstories overstated and the killer’s psychological power insufficiently developed. Jack Seale · Radio Times · October 27, 2026 · later-story spoilers
The cast may be a reason to try the series, while the densely connected characters and slowly unfolding case are worth weighing against your own tastes. Substantive Korean-language reviews could not yet be sufficiently verified.
