A lord with a reason to keep the pilot alive
After the Taikō’s death, five regents govern on behalf of his young heir. Toranaga faces pressure from the others and cannot move freely in Osaka. The arrival of captive pilot Blackthorne gives him access to knowledge of European routes and Portuguese trade that may serve his interests. Official series information

Blackthorne speaks no Japanese and is hostile to the established Portuguese Catholic presence. Mariko interprets as both Toranaga’s retainer and a Catholic. The three share a conversation without sharing the same interests or obligations. FX character guide
Five figures at the center of the negotiations

Yoshii ToranagaHiroyuki Sanada · A lord who conceals his intentions
A lord with formidable forces, Toranaga nevertheless begins surrounded by enemies. A former childhood hostage, he reveals little of his intentions. Blackthorne’s knowledge offers opportunities to expose weaknesses and change alliances.

John BlackthorneCosmo Jarvis · A pilot who must prove his worth
Skilled in navigation and ships, Blackthorne knows little of Japanese language or etiquette. Learning local rules becomes necessary for survival, but his ambition to undermine Portuguese influence remains.

Toda Mariko Anna Sawai · Toranaga’s interpreter
A noblewoman educated in Portuguese and Latin, Mariko has relied on her Catholic faith after a family tragedy. She serves Toranaga, yet must interpret for Blackthorne, a man hostile to Catholic powers. That makes translation more than a neutral task for her.

Kashigi YabushigeTadanobu Asano · A lord looking for a way to survive
The lord of Izu has pledged loyalty to Toranaga while leaving room to deal with his rivals. Blackthorne and the ship that have arrived in his territory give Yabushige something to bargain with.

Ishido KazunariTakehiro Hira · The rival who controls Osaka
Born a peasant, Ishido has risen to the center of power. He controls Osaka Castle after the Taikō’s death, gathers the other regents’ support and opposes the powerful, well-born Toranaga.
Politics conducted through conversation and translation
For Toranaga, Blackthorne’s information is a means of checking rival powers. Mariko conveys it while carrying obligations to her lord and her faith. The interpreter’s loyalties and the lord’s withheld knowledge matter to the negotiations. FX character guide

Adapted from James Clavell’s novel, the series gives negotiations over religion and trade a substantial place alongside combat. Kaiya Shunyata finds its conversations as compelling as its battles. RogerEbert.com review

A rich political drama, but emotionally distant for one critic
RogerEbert.com’s Kaiya Shunyata praises the attention to the aims of Japanese characters, including Mariko, Yabushige and Fuji, beyond Blackthorne’s perspective. Her review covers eight episodes supplied before release. Kaiya Shunyata·March 1, 2024
The New Yorker’s Inkoo Kang acknowledges the sets, costumes and waterborne action, but finds the secretive, duty-bound characters emotionally remote and the explanatory dialogue excessive. Inkoo Kang·February 26, 2024·Contains plot spoilers
